Change sounds mid-set.
Jazz at 7, funk at 10. Same drum. Both sounds.
Before this, you had to commit.
Every versatile drummer knows the situation. You need an open, resonant kick for the jazz room. Two hours later you need a dead, punchy thud for the rock gig. The front head of your bass drum has always been the one thing you couldn't adjust in seconds.
Swap heads in a parking lot. Carry two bass drums. Commit to one sound and live with it.
Until now.
The Hole Thing is a small precision-made insert that drops into your port and reshapes the sound, open and resonant or tight and punchy, in the time it takes to flip the top of a coffee can. No screws. No permanent modification. No commitment.
One head. Every sound.
"I can't believe no one invented this yet. It's genius."
--Danny Carey, drummer for Tool
Said unprompted. Not paid. Not asked.
Three steps. Seriously.
1. Line The Hole Thing up with the port hole in your front head.
2. Insert it into position. No tools required.
3. Play.
Reverse the process to remove it. Ten seconds, start to finish.
Made in two versions, one for Evans front heads and one for Remo. Choose yours above. Either one fits any drum size.

FAQ
Do I need a port hole in my front head?
Yes, and it needs to be a 5-inch port. The Hole Thing is built for a standard 5-inch bass drum port hole, the round cut-out you will find on most gigging kick drums. If your front head has no port, or a port that is not 5 inches, it will not fit. A standard 5-inch port and you are good to go.
What size port do I need and why is it 5"?
For our first run, we are only making The Hole Thing to fit a standard 5-inch port on Evans and Remo heads. This is the most common size out there. Not sure what you have? Measure the hole in your front head straight across the middle. If it is 5 inches, you are set.
Will this work with my existing front head?
Yes. The Hole Thing comes in an Evans version and a Remo version, the two most common front-head brands. Pick the one that matches your head and it works with the head you already own, at any drum size. No new head required.
Which version do I choose, Evans or Remo?
Check the logo on your bass drum front head. Evans head, Evans version. Remo head, Remo version. The brand is printed near the edge of the head if you are not sure.
What will it actually sound like?
More of a range than a switch. Seated in the port, your kick is warm and resonant with a good sustain, and it still feels like a full front head under the stick. Add a little dampening inside and it tightens right up without losing that full-head feel. Pull it out of the port and the drum opens up, bigger, more cavernous, longer sustain. One insert, a spread of kick sounds. You pick where you land.
Will it sound the same on my kit?
The effect shifts with your batter head and tuning. A coated Ambassador batter reads very differently from an EMAD, for example. The Hole Thing gives you the same set of moves on any kit. Exactly where you land depends on the heads and tuning you are already running.
Does it permanently modify my drum head?
No. The Hole Thing inserts and removes cleanly. Your head stays intact.
What sizes does it fit?
It fits any drum size, from an 18-inch kick to a 24-inch. What matters is the port, not the drum. It is built for a standard 5-inch port hole and comes in an Evans version and a Remo version, so pick the one that matches your head.
Which version do I choose — Evans or Remo?
Check the logo on your bass drum front head. Evans head → Evans version. Remo head → Remo version. The brand is printed near the edge of the head if you're not sure.
Can I change sounds mid-performance?
Yes. That is exactly what it was designed for. The process takes seconds. Fast enough to do between songs.
What comes with my order?
very order includes The Hole Thing in your chosen version, Evans or Remo. The first 100 orders also ship with three free extras: the Hole Thing Fidget Clicker, the STICK IT clip-on drumstick holder, and a Hole Thing sticker. The Fidget Clicker is a first-100 exclusive: only 100 will ever be made and it is never sold again. Once the first 100 sell out, the bonuses go with them.
When does my order ship?
Pre-sale orders ship the week of October 1, 2026. You will receive a shipping notification the moment your order is on its way.
